It's called evolving with the demographic.

When oldies stations got popular in the 80's and 90's, they were playing songs that were from the 50's and 60's. Songs that were 20-30 years old.

"Beat It" is 26 years old.

Furthermore, if you're appealing to a 35-54 demographic, today a 45 year old graduated high school in 1986, and grew up listening to Michael Jackson on the radio. Doo wop was their parent's music.

In other words, they're doing exactly what they should be doing.
