Alumni marathon Thursday on WSUM 91.7
Katjusa Cisar - January 7, 2009

While the students are away on break, the alumni are taking over the airwaves for one day at WSUM 91.7, UW-Madison's student radio station: all day Thursday, Jan. 8, they're broadcasting a live Alumni Marathon.
Bruce Ravid ('74) is flying into town from L.A. to host the marathon. His time in college at the student radio station led him to a career in music. Right after graduation, he went on to Capitol Records and eventually worked with acts like Duran Duran, Iron Maiden, the Knack, Weird Al Yankovic and Missing Persons over the course of his career.

The Alumni Marathon also makes up some of the final broadcast hours from WSUM's State Street studio. At the top of the Spring semester, they'll officially start broadcasting out of their new digs in the UW's Student Services Tower (in the University Square Complex). This Sunday, Jan. 11, they're celebrating the move with a 24-hour "Move-a-thon" that includes on-air giveaways for CDs, posters and books. If you're not by a radio, you can also stream the station live at wsum.org (click on "Listen Now" in the upper right corner of the page or on "Now Playing" to see the playlist).

In the meantime, here's the line-up for Thursday's Alumni Marathon:

9:45 a.m. Fore-play -- four tracks to set the tone.

10:00 a.m. Official beginning. Bruce Ravid plays new indie music for the hour.

11:00 a.m. Station alum Derek Eby calls to discuss his experiences working on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. More indie rock follows.

11:35 a.m. Britrock "Parklife" host Matt Hunziker calls from Minnesota to discuss music and play a few tracks.

12:25 p.m. Artist interview with Ezra Furman of Ezra Furman and the Harpoons.

1:15 p.m. WSUM DJ Danno comes in to play '80s new wave music.

1:45 p.m. Outgoing Program Director Eric Moody plays a set of club dance music.

2:30 p.m. DJ Paul V. on Indie 103.1 L.A. will call in to discuss the indie-dance/rock genre and current music trends and play the special music mix he created for the show.

3:00 p.m. Uncle Joe Benson of KLOS/Los Angeles, formerly of WZMF and WQFM Milwaukee, will call in.

3:30 p.m. A set with Tom Teuber, long-time program director at WMMM (Triple M).

4:30 p.m. Former WIBA-FM Program Director and current KFOG/San Francisco PD Dave Benson will call in. Also, long-time WIBA personality Rick Murphy (and pioneer of the old WSRM station in Ogg Hall) comes into the studio.

5:30 p.m. General Manager Dave Black joins in for the final thirty minutes, which will be free-form.
