Because they help people starving in poverty. The "Church" side of things may be anti-gay, but the outreach is far more than the "Church" side of the Salvation Army.
Not everybody that is helped by the Salvation Army worships with the Salvation Army. I don't know anybody who worships with the Salvation Army, even though they have a church in my town.
People volunteer to help the needy with the Salvation Army by donating money and ringing bells. Even athiests and gays.
Don't worry about the "Church" side of the Salvation Army if you disagree with it. I don't agree with what they belive on social issues, but they do a lot more for people who need help.
