AT&T hikes U-verse prices, adds packages

AT&T is hiking prices for some of its U-verse TV offerings and adding new packages, effective Feb. 1.

Three of its main packages will go up $5 per month for new customers only, with the price staying the same for existing customers, AT&T spokesman Bryan Blaise said in an e-mail.

The U100 and U-family packages both will increase from $44 to $49 monthly, while the U200 package will rise from $59 to $64 per month.

The three new packages are:

* U-basic for $19 per month, which includes local channels, one HD-ready receiver, and access to standard U-verse features.
* U450 for $109 per month, which includes up to 360 channels, HD service and one HD-ready DVR.
* U200 Latino for $74 per month, which combines the U200 package and Paquete Espanol Spanish language programming.

Discounts can apply when programming packages are bought in bundles with Internet and phone services.

In addition for all customers, the Movie package will increase from $15 to $20 per month, Paquete Espanol alone will increase from $10 to $15 per month, and each additional receiver that is not included as part of an existing package will increase from $5 to $7 per month.

Blaise noted that the price increases were the first since AT&T launched U-verse in Wisconsin nearly two years ago in the Milwaukee area, although it only came to portions of the Madison area last fall.

"Since we brought U-verse to Wisconsin, we've added Total Home DVR and remote access, tripled our HD channel line-up and expanded our one-of-a-kind features, including AT&T U-bar, on-screen YELLOWPAGES.com search and an online photos channel," Blaise said. "These changes, in line with increased programming and business cost, allow us to stay competitive and bring greater features and service to our U-verse customers."

AT&T last fall also took three channels out of its $10 per month HD tier -- Universal HD, MGM HD and Smithsonian HD -- and made them a separate Premium HD tier that costs $5 per month.

On Dec. 1, Charter Communications, the dominant cable provider in the Madison area, increased the price of its Expanded Basic package by $2 per month, while cutting its HD Ultra View tier by $3 per month and moving many HD channels off that tier to be included in Expanded Basic and digital packages at no extra cost. It also consolidated its digital offerings.
