: From what I understand the reason WPR's Classical Network is not featured on WHAD or any Milwaukee station is because the Classical Network also carries NPR's Morning Edition and All Things Considered. There is an agreement between WPR and Milwaukee Public Radio that WPR will not air those programs in the Milwaukee market.

: : I see WHAD has a CP for a translator at 97.9 FM in West Allis. Is this on the air, and if so, is it relaying 90.7 or 90.7 HD2?

: : I'm surprised WPR carries the Ideas network on WHAD instead of classical. Seems there'd be more of an audience (and pledge donors) for classical than the Ideas network, but maybe the Ideas network just isn't my cup of tea.

: : And hey, maybe if/when Disney dumps its Radio Disney stations as rumored, WPR can pick up WKSH and move the Ideas network over there, freeing up WHAD for Classical.

Public radio talk programming tends to do very, very well in markets, with far more listeners than classical music. No way they'd flip WHAD to classical. Though WHAD doesn't do phenomenally well in Milwaukee (WUWM, which has the NPR shows, has the higher ratings of the two), the results are better than with classical music, and brings in a better demographic of listeners (i.e. younger). And there's no way they'd ever put Ideas on an AM signal. The trend has been putting non-commercial news/talk programming on FM. And 90.7 does offer some FM coverage in the market (broadcasting in mono helps), so it covers two markets. Plus, WHAD feeds a translator in Madison (to compensate for the daytime-only AM signal of WHA).

If they do indeed utilize the translator, it will likely carry the HD2 feed, which is 24/7 classical (no NPR shows). I've heard that they bid for a license in Ozaukee County a few years back, but haven't heard much about it since. And no doubt they'd like to do classical in the market, now that WFMR is long gone.

My prediction is that they'll scoop up WMWK (88.1) if Family Radio gets out of the business, as some are guessing. Just this week, Family sold stations in the Philadelphia and Washington/Baltimore markets (though these are really good signals on the commercial part of the FM band that are worth a ton of money).
