I like the new CBS Evening news so far -- it has me back watching the nightly news. Other than the occasional look at BBC World News on WPT (also at 5:30), I had stopped watching the nightly news after Diane Sawyer took over ABC World News. She is as bad or worse as Katie Couric.

I may not like Couric or Sawyer, but it's not that I don't think a woman can hack it as the anchor. I just think both Couric and Sawyer's 'news' sensibilities and interviewing style are better suited to the fluff on Today or GMA than the nightly news. But what do I know? Sawyer has grown the ratings for WNT and narrowed the gap with NBC NN.

I really miss ABC World News with Peter Jennings or Charlie Gibson at the helm. Both were great anchors, and had an excellent pool of reporters in the field -- especially with Stephanopolous for the political analysis. Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff were good anchors for the few months they had, too.

Anyway, I'm glad they're giving Scott Pelley a shot. CBS has a tough row to hoe given how far back in 3rd they are and the limited resources of the CBS News division compared to ABC & NBC, but hopefully Pelley will give them a fighting chance.
