Hundreds of youth gathered recently for the annual 4-H & Youth Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

Thirteen Fond du Lac County 4-H delegates joined about 500 other young people representing UW-Extension's 4-H Youth Development program in celebrating the 90th anniversary of the youth program in Wisconsin. The adult 4-H leader advising the county delegation was Deanna Wiczek.

The annual four-day conference gives youth a chance to learn about a variety of 4-H and other youth programs, experience hands-on learning in a university campus atmosphere, strengthen life skills such as communication and leadership, gain knowledge to share back home, and exchange ideas and form friendships with youth from around the state.

The delegates attended workshops and assemblies developed around the theme "We've Always Been Green," which highlighted leadership, individual responsibility, goal setting, healthy living and becoming successful.

Workshop topics included everything from radio broadcasting to photography, from art appreciation to water quality and windsurfing, youth citizenship and a host of other exciting subjects.

"I now look at how I can conserve energy more, and I am more aware about the invasive species in our area," said Alexis Newton of Fond du Lac in a 4-H news release. "It was an awesome experience."
Dustin Wiczek of Oakfield said he enjoyed the breakout sessions.

"I especially enjoyed the Dream Bikes project, fixing bikes that people didn't want so less fortunate people could afford their own bike made me feel more privileged to have my own bike," he said. "The Dream Bikes program has inspired me to maybe someday open a clinic that helps the less fortunate."
