As the late, great star of WIBA radio, George “Papa Hambone” Vukelich would have put it, “Marty has left the planet.”
Recently, we lost one of the last true gentlemen of Madison commercial radio, Marty “Kay” Knudsvig. Marty delighted in doing the friendly, “next door neighbor” chat show he hosted for years, and was greatly disappointed when the station converted his program into a “stealth infomercial,” wherein his “guests” were business people who paid to join him on the air.
But, pro that he was, he soldiered on. He holds a place high on the list of the many great people I’ve met in my broadcasting career.
Now, he’s sharing a microphone with “Papa,” Jim Mader, Ken Ohst, Cliff Roberts and other legendary Madison voices. Wish I could tune in that station. As Billy Joel’s song said, “Only the good die young.”
