Country music had a personality all its own in the 80s, and it wasn't overshadowed by rock music as you depict it. Bands like The Shooters, Southern Pacific, Great Plains, The Desert Rose Band, and many others were making hits and getting played in the 80s. But for some reason radio has collective amnesia about these artists. Classic country stations never touch them. For a realistic look at 80s country, talk to Ken Scott of WJVL. He told me he played rock tracks on Q106 in the 80s and that the idea was a dud then just as it is now.

: : I hear the reason for the "livin on a prayer" and all the "non" country they play is because "if it were new today it would be country"... there you go

:
: I'll actually agree with that. Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" wasn't exactly the most twangy tune on the block, but it was a smash on the country charts. Keith Urban and John Mayer are now playing shows together. Darius Rucker (from Hootie and the Blowfish) is now a major player in country music, and his songs sound alot like Hootie and the Blowfish. Heck a lot of new songs mention or pay tribute to classic bands like Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, etc...

: The line of what's country and what's rock is completely blurred in a lot of situations.

: If you listened to country radio in the 80's, many stations played John Mellencamp, The Eagles, and Bruce Springsteen. They were dropped in the early 90's when the twang got big again with artists like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson.

: So hearing Bon Jovi may be a surprise because it hasn't been the norm, if "Wanted Dead or Alive" was released today it probably would have been a big country hit.
