: The problem isn't all CC Madison's fault, or the past programmers or jocks of Mad Radio. The problem is the direction the music industry went in. Alternative music fizzled out as the 90s ended and the 2000s began to creep upon us. It is getting a little better again, but in comparison to the dance, pop, and hip hop stuff that's charting way higher than most rock-oriented tracks...you get what I'm sayin.

Circa 1999, did the format begin to see a take-over of decidedly BAD rock (i.e. Creed, Limp Bizkit, Three Doors Down)? Yes. But there were indie rock bands around at the time that were seeing success and actually were on MAD's playlist. (Spoon, Rilo Kiley, etc.) However ask yourself this: How much do you discredit yourself as an alternative that wants to align yourself with the latter of those bands, when you're forced by management to play the earlier of those bands? Bands that were already core artists for your competition when MAD came about in 2003.

I totally agree it wasn't the local programmer's fault. MAD's downfall can always be pointed to as a corporate failure.

Also, MAD was VERY smart for playing the select classic gangsta rap (Snoop, Ice Cube, etc.) and emerging hip hop (Kanye or Matisyahu, anyone?) as well. Suburban white kid college students eat that stuff up like generic frosted mini wheats.
