It's time to tango
/77 Square/

They say it takes two to tango, but that assumes that at least one of you knows the dance.

If you want a crash course or just want to see the Argentinean dance performed, La Comunidad News will sponsor "Tango de mi Barrio" at the Overture Center on Saturday, Oct. 17, to celebrate the Madison newspaper's 20th anniversary and the launch of its new website: lacomunidadnews.com.

The paper, which is published every other week, serves Madison's Latino community with articles in both Spanish and English.

"When people think 'Latino' they tend to think of mariachi bands and Mexico," La Comunidad News Publisher Dante Viscarra said in a news release about Tango de mi Barrio. "We wanted to go beyond this stereotype and perform something that really samples the variety and sophistication of Latino culture."

Viscarra will perform with a troupe coached by Joe Yang and Antonio Testolin of Kanopy Dance Studio, 341 State St. Tango de mi barrio, translated as "tango of my neighborhood," will begin with a cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a tango workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and then a performance from 8 to 9 p.m. The event will end with a milonga, or dance party, from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Tickets for Tango de mi Barrio cost $15 and can be purchased at the Overture Center, 201 State St., or at www.overturecenter.com.

Other sponsors of Tango de mi Barrio include Kanopy Dance Studio and the Overture Center.
