Fitchburg Star to publish last edition Thursday
By DAVID WAHLBERG

The Fitchburg Star, a free, biweekly paper established in 1975, will publish its last edition Thursday, Editor Kurt Gutknecht said Saturday.

The paper’s Web site, www.fitchburgstar.com, will remain, said Gutknecht, who is losing his job. The Star is owned by Woodward Communications.

The company, based in Dubuque, Iowa, also owns the Oregon Observer, the Stoughton Courier Hub and the Verona Press, all weeklies.

Jim Normandin, vice president for newspapers at Woodward, did not return calls seeking comment.

Rich Eggleston, a Fitchburg resident who is spokesman for the Wisconsin Alliance of Cities, said the loss of the printed Star “is going to leave a big void in the community.”

Fitchburg Mayor Jay Allen said, “I think ultimately somebody will come in and fill the gap.”
