For a company like Midwest, classic country is a format you put on a frequency you have no other use for. Like music of your life. Listen to the ads on 'Hank' now. They're probably lucky to pay the power bill.

Also, 1670 does not 'blanket that whole area' -- 1670's signal doesn't really make it out of Dane County and at night, it's more or less limited to Madison and close-in burbs. So, simulcasting 1670 makes sense -- better coverage for folks in western Dane County. Iowa County is just a bonus.

It would just make more sense if 1670 had a format anyone wanted to listen to, whether they were in Dane or Iowa county. Their repeated 0.0 ratings show that's not the case. I do wonder how much longer Midwest will stick with sports.

I wish WXXM would flip to alternative (the format is hot again and there's some great music!), then maybe 1670 / 106.7 could go back to talk, and go with the progressive talk / local talk format.

But I think we'll be stuck with the current crappy status quo in Madison for quite some time.
