Channel 15 to shut down analog signal on Monday

Madison's NBC affiliate, WMTV (Ch. 15), announced on it Web site and newscast Saturday that it would turn off its analog broadcasting signal a day earlier than the city's ABC and CBS affiliates are expected to.

WMTV will go to a digital-signal-only broadcast at 11:59 p.m. Monday.

Station chief engineer Tom Weeden said an informational "crawl" on the station's analog-broadcast signal had been alerting viewers of the expected switch on Tuesday, but was modified Saturday to show the new shut-off time.

He said newscasts on Monday also would remind viewers of the switch.

Weeden said he found out Saturday afternoon that the station's attorney had said that the analog signal had to be turned off earlier.

Madison's Fox affiliate, WMSN (Ch. 47), has said it will continue broadcasting an analog signal until June 12.

The digital transition date was delayed by Congress amid fears that too many people have not purchased the digital converter boxes or taken other steps to be able to receive a digital TV signal.
